Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)

This Hollywood masterpiece was released in 2004. With an ensemble cast and such a great storyline, the film became an instant classic and won a lot of awards. It is also one of the few movies where Jim Carrey has showcased his versatile acting skills.

The name of this beautiful movie was taken from Alexander Pope’s 1717 poem Eloisa to Abelard. ‘Eternal Sunshine’ means forever and ongoing feeling of happiness, peace and relaxation where as Spotless Mind refers to a mind that does not have any signs of negative thoughts or memories. Anything more than that and we would be revealing a very big plot point.

Like many sad, romantic movies, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind touched many different aspects of life. From never ending love to betrayal, this movie had it all. Some consider it to be a Romantic Drama while others tend to focus more on the science fiction aspect of the movie.

The director Michel Gondry and writer Charlie Kaufman knew that they were creating masterpiece when the film was still under production.  The movie talks about love and how fragile our memory actually is.

In Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, Jim Carrey plays the role of a reserved introvert by the name of Joel, where as Kate Winslet plays the role of an extremely extroverted girl named Clementine. The movie starts off with Joel waking up and arriving at the train station to catch a train for work. However he is randomly and unconsciously compelled to take a train to Montauk. It is in Montauk that Joel meets Clementine. Joel, the introvert he is, does not start the conversation but it is Clementine who says the first words. They see each other on the beach however their proper conversation starts when they are on the same train going back to their hometown.

They fall in love and that is when the real drama starts. Hollywood has shown us some of the most advanced and scariest technologies that man can invent in the not so distant future. With spoiling anything for the people who have yet to watch this amazing piece of cinema, we can say that the technology shown in the movie can have drastic effects on the world if it is ever invented.

The movie revolves around a technology that plays with people’s memory. Needless to say, it has a very adverse effect on our main characters. When Joel and Clementine fall in love, the movie sort of gets into a rewind position and takes us back to the amazing time the two characters spent together. However all of that is in the memory of one of our main characters. You might feel sad during the movie but the bitter-sweet ending will make you feel satisfied.

We mentioned at the beginning that this movie touches a lot of different aspects of life. There is a very beautiful life lesson at the end of the movie, which is that no matter what happens in life, love will always find a way to bring together two people who might be going through a tough time but who love each other from the bottom of their hearts.
